Masterclass in Ethics for Assistive Technology Practice and Policy

Assistive technology service provision is complex, and often poses challenging ethical questions for the assistive technology professional. This Masterclass will review the principles of biomedical ethics, and discuss application of these principles to real-world ethical scenarios which may be faced by the practitioner. We will also discuss the challenges with ethical practice when working within policies and systems which may place constraints on the assistive technology professional. This Masterclass will draw on the experiences of participants in a workshop style format, addressing challenging ethical case studies.

  • Recognize the four principles of biomedical ethics
  • Identify ethical issues in common practice examples
  • Recognize the relationship between the principles of biomedical ethics and the RESNA Code of Ethics
  • Identify application of ethical principles to challenging cases
