Abstract: Three-dimensional (3-D) printing is becoming a useful approach to prototyping and manufacturing custom equipment in almost every market. It is also accessible to all levels of designers from professionals to hobbyists. It is specifically appropriate for adaptive sports and recreation as everyone's abilities are different and the assistance that they need or want from technology varies greatly. This session will discuss the various types of 3D printing, demonstrate how to design a device using Computer Aided Design (CAD) software, how to make a device, and allow for hands-on demonstrations of devices made by the presenter.
TITLE: 3D printing sports and recreation equipment

Tips and falls are one of the most recurrent wheelchair accidents when navigating on challenging terrains or overlooked obstacles. Existing electric-powered wheelchairs are not designed for such environments, predisposing them to loss of stability. Advances in sensing technology have enabled researchers to design robotic wheelchairs to enhance safety and mobility. This work will propose design recommendations and evaluation tools for robotic wheelchairs to meet users’ functional needs. The design framework will be illustrated by describing the design and evaluation process of a robotic wheelchair prototype with all-terrain capabilities, followed by a discussion of potential design considerations for advanced wheelchairs

Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) is one of the most severe forms of inherited muscular dystrophies. As the disease progresses boys lose the ability to ambulate and are unable to perform activities of daily living. Throughout the lifespan not only does their body change but also the need for different types of assistive technology. The challenge is that many families and their medical providers are unaware of the assistive technology available and how to access it. This presentation will present the assistive technology that can be used, when to initiate use, and how to help patients gain access to the tools available to maintain quality of life throughout the lifespan. Presenters: Julie Wells, MS, OTR/L, ATP, C/NDT and Erin Baker, PT.

Learning Outcomes:
At the end of session, attendees will be able to:- Participants will be able to identity the stages of DMD and when Assistive Technology would be beneficial
- Participants will identify at least 3 examples of low tech and 3 examples of high tech solutions to assist a person with DMD and their family
- Participants will be able to verbalize the process by which they can obtain the needed assistive technology.
Primary topic areas: Cognitive and Sensory Impairments, Seating and Mobility (including CRT)
