Webinar: Helping Clients Make Informed Decisions with the Wheelchair Functional Impact Tool (WC-FIT)

Abstract:

The Wheelchair Functional Impact Tool (WC‑FIT) is a free, educational self‑report tool designed to help individuals with new‑onset mobility impairment and their caregivers engage in meaningful discussions with the treatment team about wheeled mobility options. Its primary goal is to support shared understanding of how mobility devices may influence function, participation, and daily activities.

Informed by the International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (ICF), the WC‑FIT conceptualizes the mobility device as an environmental factor and prompts users to consider its impact across body functions and structures, activities, and participation. The tool allows users to evaluate and compare the functional impact of multiple mobility devices in a consistent, structured format.

Clients and caregivers complete the WC‑FIT outside of therapy time and then review the results with the primary treatment team. Responses across nine categories provide insight into the client’s understanding of functional advantages and limitations associated with different devices, as well as their needs, values, and preferences. This information helps guide equipment recommendations and supports informed, client‑centered decision‑making.

2. Review of how the WC-FIT content was validated and discussion of the qualitative study that helped us structure the WC-FIT to make it clinically friendly/usable
3. Tips for successful use in different clinical arenas with different resources

5. How to access the WC-FIT

Learning outcomes:

Upon successful completion of this presentation participants will:

1. Identify the purpose of the WC-FIT in supporting clinical decision-making and client-centered care for mobility device selection
2. Describe how the WC-FIT tool can be used to address the needs of different populations while remaining user-friendly
3. Analyze the impact of wheeled mobility devices on a client’s future functional outcomes across multiple ICF (International Classification of Functioning, Disability, and Health) domains through case studies
4. Locate the WC-FIT, which is open access on MyShepherdConnection.org
