Part Two: Functional AT Assessment: Tools, Templates & Data Collection
Date: Wednesday, June 17, 2026
Time: 3:00 p.m. - 4:00 p.m. Eastern
Location: Zoom via RESNA Learn
Title: Webinar Series: Building a Streamlined AT Assessment System in K-12 Schools (Part Two: Functional AT Assessment: Tools, Templates & Data Collection)
Speaker: Sharvari Dixit, OTR/L, ATP, Empower AT Services
Pricing: Free for RESNA members; $45 for non-members
Abstract: Effective assistive technology assessment in K–12 schools requires a systematic, evidence-based process for gathering and interpreting functional data. This session focuses on the assessment engine of the AT process — how practitioners observe students in context, gather meaningful data through records and team input, and use formative assessment tools to make defensible, educationally relevant AT decisions. Participants will explore practitioner-developed tools designed to support IEP teams at the point of referral, build skills in structured classroom observation using a narrative framework that distinguishes access barriers from behavioral concerns, and learn to interpret formative reading and writing assessment data in ways that directly inform AT decision-making. A running case study grounds every concept in a real student profile, illustrating how the full assessment process unfolds from referral to hypothesis.
Currently under review for IACET credit approval.
Learning Outcomes
By the end of this session, participants will be able to:
1. Define functional AT assessment and distinguish it from diagnostic evaluation
2. Describe the purpose and use of the AT Referral Form and AT Consideration Checklist
3. Identify access barriers through structured classroom observation
4. Conduct purposeful data gathering using records, team input, and formative tools
5. Interpret formative reading and writing assessment results to inform AT decisionsCurrently under review for IACET credit approval.
Target Audience
Assistive Technology specialists, occupational therapists, special education teachers, speech-language pathologists, and related service providers working in K–12 settings.

Please use this time to ask us any questions about RESNA's certification programs. During this time, we will focus on ATP eligibility, the value of our certification program, and our continuing education requirement. A RESNA staff member will walk you through the Eligibility Requirements, and answer questions such as:
- What qualifies as “AT direct service work experience?”
- What college degrees fit the “Rehab Science” category?
- How long does it take to the get the work experience? Are we talking forever, or something less than that?
This is a free event for anyone interested in the ATP certification program. Registration is required. No CE or contact hours will be awarded for this webinar.

Webinar: Helping Clients Make Informed Decisions with the Wheelchair Functional Impact Tool (WC-FIT)
0.1 IACET CEUs will be offered.
Hosted by RESNA’s Wheeled Mobility Special Interest Group
Date: Wednesday, June 3, 2026
Time: 7pm - 8pm ET
Abstract:
The Wheelchair Functional Impact Tool (WC‑FIT) is a free, educational self‑report tool designed to help individuals with new‑onset mobility impairment and their caregivers engage in meaningful discussions with the treatment team about wheeled mobility options. Its primary goal is to support shared understanding of how mobility devices may influence function, participation, and daily activities for the individual. The shared decision-making the WC-FIT facilitates is central to client empowerment.
Informed by the International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (ICF), the WC‑FIT conceptualizes the mobility device as an environmental factor and prompts users to consider its impact across body functions and structures, activities, and participation. The tool allows users to evaluate and compare the functional impact of multiple mobility devices in a consistent, structured format.
Clients and caregivers complete the WC‑FIT outside of therapy time and then review the results with the primary treatment team. This helps optimize efficiency during therapy appointments, minimize clinician’s influence on responses, and can enhance interdisciplinary communication. Responses across nine categories provide insight into the client’s understanding of functional advantages and limitations associated with different devices, as well as their needs, values, and preferences. This information helps guide equipment recommendations and supports informed, client‑centered decision‑making.
With this webinar we will focus on the following:
- Brief outline of the reason the WC-FIT was developed
- Review of how the WC-FIT content was validated and discussion of the qualitative study that helped us structure the WC-FIT to make it clinically friendly/usable
- Tips for successful use in different clinical arenas with different resources
- Short Case Studies
- How to access the WC-FIT
Learning outcomes:
Upon successful completion of this presentation participants will:
- Identify the purpose of the WC-FIT in supporting clinical decision-making and client-centered care for mobility device selection
- Demonstrate understanding of how the WC-FIT can be used to address the needs of people with different kinds of mobility impairments while remaining user-friendly and accessible in multiple treatment arenas (inpatient rehabilitation, outpatient clinics, rural areas) with differing resources (lots of trial equipment and support available vs. minimal trial equipment available).
- Use the WC-FIT to analyze the impact of wheeled mobility devices on a client’s future functional outcomes across multiple ICF (International Classification of Functioning, Disability, and Health) domains through case studies
- Locate the WC-FIT, which is open access on MyShepherdConnection.org
This webinar is currently under review by RESNA’s Education Committee for 0.1 IACET CEUs.

Abstract: School-based Assistive Technology (AT) processes often break down before assessment even begins. Educators may be unsure what AT is, when it is appropriate, or how to describe student needs in a way that leads to a meaningful referral. This webinar introduces the foundational concepts needed to build a functional, defensible AT process in K–12 schools. Participants will examine why AT systems are often fragmented, how IDEA and the IEP process shape AT consideration, and why structured identification and referral practices are essential. The session will distinguish universal supports, targeted supports, and AT; discuss common referral triggers and referral pitfalls; and emphasize the importance of defining functional access barriers before moving into assessment. Participants will leave with a clearer understanding of how to guide teams toward appropriate AT consideration and how strong problem definition leads to more focused, efficient, and educationally relevant AT assessments. This is part one of a four-part webinar series. RESNA plans to offer the remaining parts of the series, but the schedule has not yet been set. Participants may contact the instructor for more information.
